All prospective homes for our thoroughbreds are subject to our screening and approval. If you would like to adopt a thoroughbred, please contact us to make an appointment to meet us and your prospective horse at sctbrescue@live.com, speak with Jackie at our adoption center at (951)-768-2043, or with Caroline in the office at (661) 305-9021. You will need to physically visit us, and your prospective adoptive horse, before your application is processed. If your initial meeting with us and your prospective horse goes well, you can fill out our adoption application form (sample below) complete with the names of several references. Once we have received your completed application form, approvals may take as long as two weeks or more to obtain, depending on how quickly we are able to reach your references and process your application on the basis of the information that you provide. No approval is possible typically without an "on-site" check of your facility, and our receipt of several glowing references. A sample of our adoption application, and a sample adoption agreement, follow below.
Some key adoption policies that you should be aware of, before contacting us, are:
1) since our horses are typically "green/race broke" only, you must either be experienced in re-training racehorses, or verifiably plan to hire a professional re-trainer for your horse;
2) no horses are adopted as "re-sale projects";
3) no horses are adopted to lesson barns, lesson trainers, or as therapeutic riding or camp horses;
4) no horses are adopted for breeding purposes;
5) no horses are adopted out of state, unless you live in a CA border state (OR, AZ, NV) and we can feasibly reach the horse within a few hours;
6) we occasionally adopt horses to first time horse owners, but only if you show sufficient evidence of horsemanship and riding lessons/training in progress, and plan to have your adopted horse professionally re-trained along with yourself.

A copy of our adoption application form can be found here: http://www.sctbrescue.org/SCTR ADOPTION APPLICATION.pdf You can print this form and fill it out, returning a signed copy to us by regular mail or email.
The adoption application form is long, and if you are serious about adopting one of our horses please complete it in full, with as much detail and explanation as you feel is necessary. If you cannot provide a current equine vet, farrier, or boarding facility reference - for example, because you do not currently own a horse - please contact us and we will explain which alternative references would provide good substitutes. It is not necessary for you to currently own a horse, or to have experience with ex-racehorses, in order for us to be willing to adopt out a horse to you. However, we do insist that first time owners of an ex-racehorse have a professional trainer, and retraining plan, in place, as well as a broader support system - all of which we are happy to help provide you with.
A copy of our adoption agreement can be found here: http://www.sctbrescue.org/SCTR ADOPTION AGREEMENT.pdf. Sometimes, conditional on specific horse or adopter characteristics, we may adapt or modify this agreement slightly. In particular, some horses may never be resold or transferred except if you choose to return the horse to SCTR. If you are considering adopting one of our horses, please read this agreement and all of its terms and conditions carefully :)
In addition, please note that - particularly in the case of horses arriving directly at SCTR from the racetrack or breeding farm as owner donations - SCTR may choose to hold the Jockey Club papers of the horse for up to one year following its adoption.
